First-timer checklist: before you open an account

Nothing here tells you what to bet. It is a list of things to check so you do not get surprised by rules, fees, taxes or scams.

Last verified: . Education only, not betting, legal or tax advice.

  1. Check the age. Most states set 21; some set 18 (our state pages show which, with sources). Operators may set higher minimums. State rules
  2. Use a licensed operator. Confirm it is on your state regulator's list. How to check
  3. Expect ID and location checks. Legal apps verify who you are and that you are in the state.
  4. Understand the price. Odds include a margin. How odds work
  5. Read bonus terms before accepting. Bonus fine print
  6. Set limits before you start. Licensed operators are required in some states (such as Pennsylvania) to offer deposit, time and wager limits and cool-off periods. Decide your limit when you are calm, not mid-game.
  7. Know the tax rules. Winnings are taxable income. Taxes on winnings
  8. Keep records. Save your account statements; the IRS says you need an accurate record of winnings and losses to deduct losses.
  9. Only use money you can afford to lose. Never borrow to bet. If it stops being fun, get help.
